On his blog (38pitches.com), Schilling indicates that he suggested the weigh-in clauses, which will apparently require that he step on the scale a total of six times during the course of the season (or pre-season?). I can only imagine the ramifications if such clauses became prevalent in other professions: “Ricky, you deliver a mean newspaper and no one–and I mean NO one–can take that away from you. It’s just that, well, we’re going for a sleak corporate image and your bikeseat has been showing signs of extra wear. Drop ten or I’ll have to dock you twenty.”

Most fans expect more out of their beloved athletes than they can deliver in their own lives. I wonder how many die-hard Red Sox, in the name of truly supporting one of the most impactful players in Boston history, would be willing to set a weight-loss target of their own. We’d be willing to publish the “before” pictures on this website, and provide updates along the way.
